Sideblog lives!
bloggzen - total immersion blogging technology innovation
I am so glad as I really love and use sideblog to post links to my fotozen blog as you can see on the left, it is really neat and the only one that can do this, Viva Sideblog.
Sideblog will live on! We'll be moving to a new server over the next few weeks and it looks like we'll be picking up a helping hand for development, so Sideblog will get even better. Stay tuned for more info as things develop. Also, although we'll obviously try to manage a smooth transition, there may be some service interruption. If there is, don't panic. We'll have things up and running as soon as possible.

Plums
Nature Notes by K
ecozen - animals ecology philanthropy
francaiszen - la vie

One sure sign that summer is passing, other than the yellowing and falling of the first leaves, is the passing of the plums. Now when we walk beneath the plum tree that just a week ago dropped a score of succulent plums into the rich thick grass overnight, we find only seven or eight plums, some of which have already falen prey to the yellow jackets and African honey bees, so be careful which ones you pick up. I have been stung, and my finger swelled up and hurt as if I had hit it with a hammer. The geese have been stung, so prefer to wait on the terrace for me to find the good plums, which I then feed to them, saving a few for myself. A visitng friend, wary of the grass and bees and things unseen, picked her plums right off the tree, though we rarely do. When they are ripe, they will fall, and now they have almost all fallen.
Here in Molene, things happen quickly, dramatically, and then are over, usually within about two weeks. Three weeks ago, with pecks of plums hanging from the boughs, you had to be careful that the plums were ripe, yet I think we will have no plums at all a week from today..

While The City is home to some of the richest concentrations of businesses in the world, its fringes include some of the most underprivileged boroughs in England.
On Tuesday 19th October at St Paul's Cathedral, The Prince's Trust is holding a special City event that will address this polarisation. Sponsored by Coutts and Co, Bridging the Gap will bring together CEO's and board level Executives of major Blue Chip corporations, key industry leaders and public sector organisations.
Sir David Garrard, Chairman of Minerva Plc and Sponsor of the renowned Business Academy in Bexley, has kindly agreed to address the audience as key speaker on the fundamental wealth/deprivation divide, and will be exploring ways in which City stakeholders can help Bridge The Gap in conjunction with The Prince's Trust.
The evening will begin with an exclusive champagne reception surrounding Nelson's Tomb, and will be followed by a private recital, tour of the cathedral and superb three course dinner.
Booking your place
Tickets for Bridging the Gap are £300 per head. All proceeds will go directly to The Prince's Trust. Through your support we hope to raise a sum that will help us make a significant impact to the skills and employment prospects of disadvantaged young people across London.

Would you like to see your
ideas about art on the walls of Tate Britain? We're asking visitors to write
about any work of art on display at Tate Britain which especially interests
them. We'll pick about thirty of the most interesting comments and use them
as captions in the gallery.
They will be on view at Tate Britain from 20 September 2004, the start of British

The Cholmondeley Ladies
circa 1600-10 painting Presented anonymously 1955
According to the inscription (bottom left), this painting shows 'Two Ladies
of the Cholmondeley Family, Who were born the same day, Married the same day,
And brought to Bed [gave birth] the same day'. To mark this dynastic event,
they are formally presented in bed, their babies wrapped in scarlet fabric.
Identical at a superficial glance, the lace, jewellery and eye colours of the
ladies and infants are in fact carefully differentiated. The format echoes tomb
sculpture of the period. The ladies, whose precise identities are unclear, were
probably painted by an artist based in Chester, near the Cholmondeley estates.
(From the display caption February 2004)
Note > I am also searching for several valuable family portraits which have dissapeared (they are mine, it's a long story), possibly sold by a dealer to an unsuspecting person or put up for auction with a false provenance. If you have any info I can send photos and a more detailed description. If this leads to anything I shall give you a reward.
One of them is of this chap, although not this actual picture.
Montague Cholmeley (1743-1852)
Also Katharine Cholmeley, full length in a red and blue dress by Lely or Kneller.

Animal Cruelty Film at the Toronto Film Festival
I found this message from a Cat forum member, I hesitated about copying it here thinking that in doing so it would benefit the perpetrators, but felt I had to. I have 7 cats they are my babies. Saint Francis was always right!
The film is called "Casuistry: The Art of Killing a Cat".
ecozen - animals ecology philanthropy
artzen - art culture info expo

The Toronto Film Festival
is planning to show a truly horrible film on September 14th in its "REAL TO REEL" section.
In 2001 three young men took 17 minutes to skin alive a sweet friendly stray cat named Kensington - and videotaped it. The cat was conscious, and in horrible pain while they performed this savage act with a dull knife.
A young female friend of theirs called the police. Policemen who watched the videotape broke down in tears and had to turn it off.
Now the Toronto Film Festival thinks it is "art" to show a documentary made about this sadistic act, though mercifully none of the actual cat killing footage is included in the documentary.
The film festival apparently thinks this is a topic worthy of debate. What's to debate? There's no gray area here. These three men are not celebrities, they're sadistic punks. Why glorify them, or give other young savages the idea that they can become famous if they do something repulsive enough?
If you'd like to protest - PLEASE PLEASE DO:
FAX the press office at: 1-416-581-0214.
You can address your faxes to: Michele Maheux, Managing Director,Toronto Film Festival or CALL: 1-416-934-3200

Jack Vettriano is a Buy

I am so pleased that the art world finally appreciates this super artist. It has been embarassing the way in which his work has been scathed at by certain art "experts" over the years. David Ogilvy once said "The consumer isn't stupid she's your wife".

The largest collection of works by the artist Jack Vettriano to go under the hammer has fetched almost £2.7 million. Following fierce bidding, the total of 40 paintings fetched £2.653m at auction. The highest bid was for Mad Dogs, one of his early works, which become the second most expensive Vettriano ever sold...more...via the Scotsman

artzen - art culture info expo
londonzen - park life
If you find yourself in Bond Street do go and see this, there are some quite affordable items. Also you can have a snack at the Sotheby's Cafe, it is small and chic and very good, perfect to collapse in after too much shopping.
"I am delighted to introduce our 2004 Sotheby's Staff Exhibition and to invite you to spend some time viewing the eclectic compilation of works contributed by Sotheby’s employees.
Given the environment in which they work it is hardly surprising that so many of our staff are inspired to be creative themselves. What continues to amaze me is how the breadth of the Exhibition keeps growing year-on-year. 2004 is no exception, with possibly the most diverse collection that we have so far seen." Robin Woodhead

IAN FLEMING, CREATOR OF JAMES BOND -- FORTY YEARS LATER
Wednesday, September 15, 2004, 8:00 pm
Free and open to the public.
American Library in Paris
10 rue du General Camou
75007 Paris
Info- 01 53 59 12 60 alparis@noos.fr
"The name is Bond… James Bond." Spoken in clipped British tones by the darkly handsome screen star, these words have echoed across the world as movie audiences tense for the newest adventure of Ian Fleming's legendary hero.
To commemorate the anniversary of Ian Fleming's death in 1964 -- Vincent Chenille, a collector of print materials on Bond and Fleming for nearly 20 years, will present an evening devoted to the discovery of the rather flamboyant creator of Bond, his background in the British Secret Service and in journalism, and how Fleming’s own background influenced British spy 007's universe.
Chenille’s exhibit, which is now on display at the Library, showcases both original editions and reprints of Fleming's work in a variety of languages and formats, together with photos, articles, and biographical materials. The background is designed by Armelle Aymonin.
Complementing Chenille's discussion will be a second presentation by Pierre Rodiac of Club 007 France, who will describe the evolution of Bond from the pages of the bestselling paperback novels to the big screen and thence to a hero of mythic stature. His discussion will also encompass works of other writers who, in the past 50 years, capitalized on the Bond persona, including Kingsley Amis, John Gardner, and Raymond Benson.
Presentations will be in English; questions accepted in either French or English. Wine reception to follow.
