Don't Trash Wildlife

ecozen - animals ecology philanthropy

The Humane Society of the United States says >

If you're hiking, camping, or picnicking this summer or simply taking a walk in the park take care to dispose of containers and plastic wrap responsibly. Wild animals are attracted to items you throw away.

Glass jars still smelling of peanut butter, plastic containers with a bit of yogurt at the bottom, plastic food wrap that looks and smells good enough to eat, and plastic six-pack rings all can be deadly to curious and hungry squirrels, birds, raccoons, skunks, foxes, and other animals.

Lot# 1: ALDROVANDI, ULISSE (1522-1605).

The publication of Aldrovandi's works is complicated, involved a number of editors, and patrons, and carried on for many years after his death in 1605.

In fact only four volumes were published in his lifetime, when the author was in his eighties. At his death he bequeathed his library, unpublished manuscripts and museum (the greatest of its day) to the city of Bologna.

Among other things, his work is notable for describing or figuring several birds for the first time, including the toucan and the bird of paradise.

A fine set of perhaps the most beautiful zoological encyclopaedia of the renaissance comprising:...details Sotheby's

"Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough.

If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men."

Am I a Picasso?

artzen - art culture info expo

Famille Arlequin
"Famille Arlequin"
Photo courtesy of Sotheby's whilst the work was in thier Paris office.

I am very excited to be part of this extraordinary discovery. Two Picasso images probably dating from 1905, have been recently discovered in France. Please go to the site http://www.amiapicasso.4t.com to see both images and read about their enthralling history. Please contact me if you have any ideas, or are an expert in this feild. Thank you.

Both pictures are mirror-images on opposite sides of the same sheet of paper. This newly discovered single sheet of paper thus contains two previously unknown Picasso renderings, of a very famous Picasso image.

The two pictures are, in fact, identical in subject matter and treatment to the famous "Famille Arlequin" and were very probably completed on the same day in March 1905. More to the point, the basic ink composition for Famille Arlequin was, most likely, completed at the very same instant, as part of the same printing process....read more>

The Flickr Creation Myth
The idea for Flickr occurred in November 2003 when one of Ludicorp's team members was on a business trip to New York and contracted a miserable case of food poisoning. Up all night, feverish and unable to sleep, he had a brainstorm: what if we put live chat together with social networks and enabled people to share media with one another in real time? He brought the idea back to the Ludicorp team in Vancouver, British Columbia where they mulled it over...more>

More than 60 influential scientists, including 20 Nobel laureates, issued a statement yesterday asserting that the Bush administration had systematically distorted scientific fact in the service of policy goals on the environment, health, biomedical research and nuclear weaponry at home and abroad.

The sweeping accusations were later discussed in a conference call organized by the Union of Concerned Scientists, an independent organization that focuses on technical issues and has often taken stands at odds with administration policy. The Madonna of the Pinks

National Gallery Wins Fight for 'Madonna' Painting By Sherna Noah, PA News

The National Gallery has won its fight to keep the Renaissance masterpiece, the Madonna of the Pinks in Britain, it announced today.

The museum has been campaigning for 18 months to retain the tiny Raphael painting, since its owner, the Duke of Northumberland, agreed to sell the work to the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

In January last year the National Gallery was given breathing space when the Department of Culture, Media & Sport slapped an export ban on the artwork going abroad.

Today, the museum, where the painting has been on long-term loan since 1991, announced that it had bought the canvas for 22 million. via...The Scotsman

Truffes

ecozen - animals ecology philanthropy

UZES JOURNAL
Voila, the Chinese Truffle (the French Accent Is Fake) By Craig S. Smith

Uzes, France; A lively black and white mongrel named Dolly raced around beneath a grove of gnarled oak trees here with its nose to the ground before suddenly scratching frantically in the dark earth.

"Wait for me," shouted Dolly's owner, Michel Tournayre, a lean man of 40 wearing a brown leather vest and carrying a small pickax. Kneeling beside the dog, he pushed her snout aside, and dug out a hard plum-sized ball of black fungus. "That's 30 euros," or nearly $40, he said, holding the truffle and giving it an enthusiastic sniff. via...NYT

I lived near Uzes on and off for years. I was lucky to be given a truffle hunting puppy in a garage near Mont Ventoux. Quenin was the best in every way, a bracque de provence, alas she died of nose cancer a few years ago. A French book about Les Truffes came out then, it was very good, a sculduggerous tale, following in the wake of "A year in Provence" and all that truffe.

Once having bought some antiques from a chap near Avignon, we were presented with a bottle of local hooch and a plastic bag full of truffes. That evening we tested the hooch in the fire, apparently it makes you go blind. The home made Pastis has other attributes, it makes you go mad! I know several victims. The real Pastis is not much better, be carefull, I hate the taste it is like Ouzo, which can only be drunk in a deserted cove during urchin gouging.

The kilo of truffes were exceptional. Worth probably more than the things he delivered. Most of them added to an omelette and the rest kept by the eggs to flavour them for the future.

About three years ago some friends took us to party near Cahors. We stopped off to see a truffle hunter. It was cold, his pet pig was not in the mood. That evening there was a Jazz party truffle fest up the hill. 100 people, truffes galore, in scrambled eggs, in mashed potatoes, in sausages. 7 different wines and champagne. My companion asked for mustard...much to the graciosly concealed consternation of our friends.

penguin passion

Love That Dare Not Squeak Its Name By Dinitia Smith
Roy and Silo, two chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo in Manhattan, are completely devoted to each other. For nearly six years now, they have been inseparable. They exhibit what in penguin parlance is called "ecstatic behavior": that is, they entwine their necks, they vocalize to each other, they have sex. Silo and Roy are, to anthropomorphize a bit, gay penguins. When offered female companionship, they have adamantly refused it. And the females aren't interested in them, either. via... NYT

HORSEKILLERS.COM
Sign the petition to end horse slaughter in Illinois!

The American tradition of loving and respecting horses existed long before there was a United States. Americans counted on horses to build this nation; to plow the fields and to carrying soldiers to battle. Horses are for many people part of their family, and they are considered to be companion animals, just as dogs and cats are.

Unfortunately, not everyone in the United States is willing to give the horse the respect it deserves. There are those who are willing to see horses killed for profit, and that is who this website seeks to expose. Horse slaughter proponents claim to care about horses, but the facts and the video footage tell a very different story. via... sharkonline

Grapes and raisins put dogs at risk

ecozen - animals ecology philanthropy

HINTS FROM HELOISE - King Features Syndicate
Dear Heloise: I think it's important to advise your readers that grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs. An article in a dog magazine reported that a dachshund died after eating only four or five grapes. The article indicated most dogs can handle a few grapes or raisins. But given the risk, why not eliminate grapes and raisins from a dog's diet altogether?
