TOURISM and a rise in whale-watching off the north-west coast of the United States is seriously hampering communication among killer whales, according to new research.
The animals are increasing the length of their calls as they have to compete with the escalating din from the engines of visitors' boats, scientists say.
Calls are recorded as having lengthened by 15 per cent since the 1990s, as the number of vessels taking visitors whale-watching off the Washington state coast increased five-fold - possibly jeopardising the very resource on which they depend. via ...The Scotsman

Literature and Folklore (known by its Russian acronym, FEB). Quoting David
Powelstock, professor of Russian literature at Brandeis University: FEB is "the
most remarkable web resource for the study of Russian literature I have ever
seen. I've been working with the [FEB section on the poet] Lermontov..., and
it is hard to exaggerate how wonderful a tool this is....It's really phenomenal."
Quoting Igor Pilshchikov, FEB's editor-in-chief: "In philology, as in other
fields of the humanities, a great deal of effort is spent on routine tasks like
searching. Traditionally, philologists spend about 80 percent of their time
searching for material, and 20 percent actually analyzing it. With our site,

the press release: "The site currently provides access to metadata and some
digital images from two sheet music collections from the Indiana University
Lilly Library. Metadata is available for the approximately 24,000 pieces in
the Lilly Library's Sam DeVincent Collection of American Sheet Music, along
with digital images from over 1,000 pieces in this collection. Metadata for
over 500 pieces from the Lilly's Starr Sheet Music Collection is available,
as are digital images for most of the Starr items. This site supplements access
to metadata for these two sheet music collections that has been available to
Open Archives Initiative (OAI) metadata harvesters such as the Sheet
Music Consortium, the UIUC

Nominate an artist for the Turner Prize 2004

Who would you like to see on the Turner Prize shortlist this year? Simply fill in this form after reading through the guidelines and your favourite British artist from 2003/4 will be considered by the Jury for inclusion on the shortlist.
You will also be entered into a prize draw to win a pair of tickets to the Turner Prize 2004 opening party.
Guidelines
Your chosen artist must be under the age of 50 and British, which in this case applies to all artists working in the UK and to British-born artists who may be working abroad. They also need to have had an outstanding exhibition or display in the twelve months preceding 30 April 2004.
Deadline for nominations: 30 April
Announcement of shortlist: 18 May
The Exhibition
The Turner Prize 2004 will be awarded at Tate Britain in December 2004, and the four shortlisted artists will exhibit their work at the gallery from 20 October.
The shortlist will be announced on 18 May.

Shangri La incorporates architectural features from the Islamic world and houses Duke's extensive collection of Islamic art, which she assembled over more than 60 years.
- Rough Point in Newport, Rhode Island. The Newport Restoration Foundation was created in 1968, based on the urgent need to save the city's rapidly disappearing 18th century architecture.

California Senator To Block Google's Gmail By TechWeb News Securitypipeline
A California state senator will introduce legislation opposing Google's recently-announced Gmail Web-based e-mail service, citing invasion of privacy concerns.
Sen. Liz Figueroa, a Democrat from Fremont and the author of the state's "Do-Not-Call" law that lets Californians block telemarketing calls, last week sent a letter to Google urging the company to rethink its plan to roll out a free e-mail service.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation is also worried about Gmail.

The seals are being murdered and tortured. There have been many articles about this atrocity. There are many more frightfull deeds committed by man all over the world which go unreported.
This is the best report about what is really going to be happening today in Canada.
".... the vets carried out postmortem examinations on 76 seal carcasses left behind on the ice after being skinned, and their findings have shocked even the most hardened anti-hunt campaigners.
Examinations of the skulls revealed that 17% showed no signs of any cranial injury which would have caused the animal to be unconscious when its pelt was removed. A further 25% showed only minimal or moderate signs of injury which the vets conclude would also have been unlikely to cause unconsciousness.
The panel also reviewed video evidence of this year's and previous hunts. It found that in almost 80% of kills recorded, no effort was made by the hunter to check that the seals were unconscious, while in 40% of cases, the hunter left the animal on the ice before returning to club it a second time, suggesting that it was conscious and suffering in the meantime.
"Based on our observations, it is obvious that there is a tremendous lack of consistency in the treatment of each seal, and the existing regulations are neither respected nor enforced," the report says. >>more

More than 12,000 sealers are on the massive ice floes off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador on Monday to begin the busiest stretch of the largest seal hunt in more than 50 years.
